There really is something special about photographing a proposal. You know what’s about to happen, they don’t, and you’re trying to act completely normal while secretly thinking, “Please don’t notice the photographer!” It’s one of those jobs where there’s a fair amount of planning behind the scenes, but when everything comes together and you see the reaction, it’s completely worth it.It’s alot like music photography & I just LOVE that about proposal sessions.
I’ve photographed proposals in all sorts of locations, but Chatsworth is definitely up there as one of those places that makes you stop and take it all in. The house, the gardens and the surrounding Derbyshire countryside are pretty spectacular. But honestly, it’s the people and the moments that make the photographs.

Why Chatsworth House Makes Such a Beautiful Proposal Location
If your other half loves beautiful gardens, grand houses, countryside or perhaps has a little bit of a Pride and Prejudice obsession, Chatsworth is a pretty good choice!
There’s something about the combination of the historic house and gardens that gives you lots of possibilities for your proposal. You can choose a setting that feels right for you, and then afterwards you’ve got all those beautiful surroundings to explore together.
And that’s one of my favourite things about photographing proposals. The actual question might only take a few seconds, but the time afterwards gives us the chance to capture so much more.
Once you’ve asked the question and they’ve said yes, you have this whole beautiful setting to wander around together while you’re still on that massive “OMG, WE’RE ENGAGED!” high.
Real Chatsworth House Proposal Photography
I’ve photographed proposals at Chatsworth, and it’s been lovely seeing how different each couple and each proposal can be. There isn’t one formula that works for everyone. Some couples want everything planned down to the last detail, while others have a rough idea and figure out the rest as they go. Both are completely fine.
Here are a few Chatsworth proposals I’ve had the pleasure of photographing.
Ashleigh & Kuran’s Spring Proposal
Ashleigh & Kuran’s proposal took place at Chatsworth in spring, when the gardens were looking absolutely beautiful. Their proposal was arranged as part of a Chatsworth proposal package, with the experience incorporating some lovely locations around the gardens, including the Maze, Grotto House, Cascade and the Emperor Fountain.
The proposal itself took place at the Emperor Fountain, which made for a pretty spectacular setting for such a big question. Kuran popped the question and, thankfully, Ashleigh said yes!
Once the initial excitement had settled, we spent some time wandering around the gardens and capturing photographs of them together. This is the part I really love. The nerves have gone, the secret is out, the ring is on and suddenly you’re just two people who have realised you’re getting married.
It’s lovely to be able to capture those first few moments as an engaged couple, rather than just the proposal itself.

Jacob & Sneha’s Chatsworth House Proposal
Jacob & Sneha’s Chatsworth proposal was another lovely example of why I enjoy photographing these sessions. There’s so much that happens before the actual proposal that you don’t necessarily see in the final photographs – the planning, the messages, working out where I’ll stand and making sure I’m close enough to capture the moment without giving the surprise away.
Then comes that moment and everything changes.
Once Jacob had asked the question and Sneha had said yes, we could relax and concentrate on capturing them together. Those first photographs as an engaged couple are always really special because they’re not something you can recreate later. They’re photographs of a very specific moment in your lives, when you’re still taking in the fact that you’ve just got engaged.

How Does the Photography Work Without Giving the Surprise Away?
One of the first things people ask me when they’re planning a surprise proposal is, “But how will you actually photograph it without them knowing?” It’s a completely fair question!
The last thing you want is to spend weeks planning the perfect proposal, only for your partner to spot me with a camera before you’ve even had the chance to get down on one knee. That’s why we’ll chat through the plan beforehand and work out all the little details.
We’ll talk about where you’re planning to propose, what your partner is likely to be doing, the best place for me to position myself and how I can be there without drawing attention to myself. I’ll keep a low profile and let you enjoy the moment rather than making myself part of it.
You don’t need to worry about giving me a complicated signal or remembering exactly what we’ve discussed. I’ll be watching for those little cues that tell me the moment is about to happen, and I’ll be ready to capture it.
That includes the nervous anticipation, the moment they realise what’s happening, their reaction, the hug and all those little in-between moments that happen in a matter of seconds.
Once the surprise is over, I’ll introduce myself properly and we can relax and enjoy the rest of the session together. That’s when we can explore the gardens, take some beautiful photographs of you both and properly celebrate the fact that you’re engaged! 💍
And Then… You’re Engaged!
This is my favourite bit.
Once you’ve proposed, I don’t want you to feel like the photographs are suddenly finished and it’s time to go home. The proposal is actually just the beginning, and the moments afterwards can be some of the most genuine and emotional photographs from the whole session.
The nerves have gone, the secret is out and you’re probably still processing what has just happened. There might be happy tears, lots of laughter, a few phone calls to family and friends and quite possibly several moments where you look at the ring and think, “Is this actually happening?”
We’ll take some time afterwards to photograph you together around the gardens. And don’t worry if you’re thinking, “We’re terrible at having our photo taken.” You don’t need to know how to pose and you definitely don’t need to suddenly become models.
I’ll give you a little direction when you need it, but I’ll mostly let you interact naturally. We’ll walk, chat, laugh and enjoy the moment while I capture what’s happening.
I want the photographs to feel like you, rather than a series of stiff or overly posed engagement photographs.
Chatsworth House Proposal Photography That Feels Natural
My approach to proposal photography is very much about the story.
I’m not interested in turning your proposal into a big staged production. The proposal is already a huge moment, so I don’t think it needs much interference from me. My job is to quietly document what’s happening and then help you create some beautiful photographs together afterwards.
My background in music & wedding and portrait photography definitely influences the way I work. I love the combination of documentary photographs and gently directed portraits, so you get a mixture of photographs that capture what actually happened alongside images you’ll want to frame and put on the wall.
Most importantly, I want you to look back at the photographs in ten or twenty years and remember how that day actually felt, not just what you looked like.

When Should You Propose at Chatsworth?
Honestly? Whenever feels right for you.
Spring can be gorgeous, as Ashleigh & Kuran discovered, with fresh greenery and beautiful gardens. Summer gives you longer days and plenty of opportunities for an evening proposal, while autumn can bring those lovely warm tones through the gardens. Winter has a completely different, quieter atmosphere that can be beautiful in its own way.
If you’re thinking about the photographs, softer light later in the day can be particularly lovely. But don’t get too caught up in trying to create the “perfect” photograph.
The perfect proposal is the one that feels like you two.

You could ask a friend to take a photograph, set up your phone or simply rely on your own memories of the day.

I’m based in Manchester, but I photograph proposals across the North West, Derbyshire, Cheshire and further afield.
