I always think proposals are such a beautiful thing to photograph because, unlike a wedding day where everyone knows what’s happening, a proposal is filled with those tiny seconds of surprise. The nervous smiles, the “is this really happening?” moment, the laughter afterwards.
It’s completely real.
But before the big question happens, there’s usually a lot going on behind the scenes.
Where should you do it?
How do you keep it a surprise?
What if the weather changes?
What if they guess?

But honestly?
The best proposals I’ve photographed haven’t been about making everything look perfect.
They’ve been about creating a moment that feels like you.

Start With Your Story
Before thinking about locations, decorations or grand gestures, think about the two of you.
What makes your relationship special?
Maybe it’s the place where you had your first date.
Maybe it’s your favourite walk together.
Maybe it’s somewhere you visit every weekend.
Maybe it’s simply a quiet moment somewhere beautiful where you can focus on each other.
The location matters, but the meaning behind it matters more.

Choose Somewhere That Feels Like You
There’s no “correct” proposal location.
Some couples love the idea of a busy city backdrop.
Others would feel much happier somewhere peaceful where it feels like the world has disappeared for a few minutes.
Manchester and North West is actually an amazing place for proposals because there’s so much variety.
You could have:
- A sunset moment beside the Castlefield canals
- A quiet walk through Fletcher Moss gardens
- A city view overlooking Manchester
- A countryside proposal just outside the city at Dovestone Reservoir
- A proposal at Chatsworth House or Arley Hall
The best location is the one where your partner would think:
“This is so us.”

Don’t Put Too Much Pressure on the Words
One thing I hear from couples is that they worry about what they’re going to say.
Do they need a speech?
Do they need to remember everything?
The answer is no.
You don’t need a perfectly written script.
The most emotional proposals are usually simple.
Tell them what you love about them.
Tell them why you want to spend your future together.
Tell them what they mean to you.
The emotion in that moment will always be more powerful than perfectly rehearsed words.

Think About The Moment Afterwards
Something I always encourage couples to think about is what happens after they say yes.
That first hug.
The laughter.
The “we’re actually engaged!” feeling.
Those moments are some of my favourites to photograph because they’re completely natural.
After the proposal, we can take some relaxed engagement photographs together so you have more than just the moment they said yes – you have the whole feeling of that day.

How To Keep A Proposal A Surprise
Keeping the secret can be one of the hardest parts!
Especially if your partner knows you well and starts wondering why you’re suddenly suggesting a romantic walk or planning a special day.
A few things that help:
Keep things natural.
Don’t over-plan every tiny detail.
Have a simple reason for being at the location.
And if you’re involving friends or family, make sure they’re good at keeping secrets!
Sometimes the slightly imperfect moments become the ones you laugh about years later.

Why Proposal Photography Is Worth Considering
