Some engagement sessions just feel a little bit more magical than others.
And when your couple are high school sweethearts from Florida, have reconnected after years apart, travelled to England on a European adventure and one of them is a huge Pride and Prejudice fan… well, there was really only one place this proposal and engagement session could take place.
Daniella and Lucas travelled over from Florida, USA, as part of a European trip, but Lucas had something else planned during their time in England.
A surprise proposal.
And after months of planning, emails, video calls, logistics and a lot of keeping things under wraps, I finally got to meet them at Chatsworth House for the big moment.
From high school sweethearts to finding each other again
Daniella and Lucas’s story made this proposal particularly special.
They were high school sweethearts back in Florida before life took them in different directions. They went their own way, but a few years ago they reconnected.
And here they are now.
In England.
At one of the UK’s most beautiful historic estates.
And engaged.
I absolutely love stories like this because there’s something incredibly romantic about two people finding their way back to each other.
And knowing how much Daniella loves Pride and Prejudice, Chatsworth House felt like such a fitting backdrop for this next chapter.
Planning the surprise proposal at Chatsworth House
The proposal had been in the works for quite a while.
Lucas and I had been chatting over email and video calls, working through the plans and logistics and figuring out exactly how we could make the surprise work.
There’s a lot more to photographing a surprise proposal than simply turning up with a camera.
We needed to work out where Lucas and Daniella would be, where I would be positioned, how I could stay discreet, when we’d move between locations and how we’d make everything look completely natural.
I was also liaising with the team at Chatsworth House to make sure everything came together on the day.
And thankfully, I had some brilliant help.
A massive thank you to Joules and Gill at Chatsworth for helping coordinate the proposal and making the logistics on the day so much easier.
They were absolute stars.
They even drove us around the gardens in the buggy between locations, which meant we could make the most of our time and explore so much more of Chatsworth’s beautiful gardens.
The proposal in the Grotto
I’ve photographed proposals at Chatsworth House before, but this was a first for me.
The actual proposal took place in the Grotto.
And honestly?
Stunning.
There’s something about the Grotto that feels completely different from the wider gardens. It’s intimate, atmospheric and incredibly romantic, making it such a beautiful setting for a surprise proposal.
I was tucked away and ready for the moment Lucas asked the question.
And then it happened.
That moment when Daniella realised what was happening.
The surprise.
The excitement.
The ring.
The emotions.
And then that huge we’re actually engaged! feeling.
It’s always such a privilege to photograph a proposal, but knowing the story behind these two made this one particularly lovely.
From proposal to engagement photoshoot
Once the secret was out and the nerves had disappeared, it was time to enjoy the rest of the day.
And this is one of my favourite parts of photographing a proposal.
The proposal might only last a few minutes, but afterwards you have this wonderful opportunity to slow everything down and capture the newly engaged couple properly.
For Daniella and Lucas, we explored the Chatsworth gardens together and photographed them in a whole range of different locations.
And when I say a whole range, I mean it!
We visited places around the Maze and steps, Rose Garden, Blue Bridge, Cascade and Emperor Fountain, as well as stopping at some of the gorgeous little in-between locations along the way.
Some of these were completely new locations for me to photograph, which made the session even more exciting.
Chatsworth House engagement photography that feels like a movie
One of the things that struck me while photographing Daniella and Lucas was just how cinematic everything looked.
The gardens.
The architecture.
The pathways.
The water.
The autumnal colours.
And, of course, the two of them.
There were moments where it genuinely felt like we’d wandered onto the set of a period drama.
Which, given Daniella’s love of Pride and Prejudice, felt rather appropriate.
The images have that slightly dreamy, romantic quality that makes you want to step straight into the frame.
But as beautiful as the locations are, I always think the couple themselves are what make the photographs.
The laughter.
The little glances.
Walking hand in hand.
The moments where they forgot I was even there.
Those are the photographs I love most.
Exploring the Chatsworth Gardens
One of the reasons I love photographing engagement sessions at Chatsworth House is the sheer variety you can get within one session.
You don’t have to stay in one spot.
You can move from the more formal gardens to beautiful architectural details, bridges, fountains, woodland paths and open spaces.
For Daniella and Lucas, we made our way around the gardens, stopping whenever we found a location, a composition or a pocket of beautiful light.
The Rose Garden gave us a completely different feel from the Blue Bridge.
The Cascade brought movement and water into the photographs, while the Emperor Fountain gave us those grand Chatsworth views.
And then there were all the little spots between them.
Sometimes those unexpected locations end up being the ones that create my favourite photographs.
A relaxed approach to engagement photography
If you’re nervous about having your photograph taken, don’t worry.
You definitely don’t need to know how to pose.
My approach to engagement photography is relaxed and documentary-led. I’ll give you some direction when it’s useful, but I don’t want you spending the entire session worrying about where to put your hands or whether you’re standing correctly.
Instead, we’ll explore together.
We’ll walk.
We’ll chat.
I’ll look for beautiful light and interesting locations.
And I’ll photograph the little moments happening naturally between you.
The aim is for your engagement photos to feel like you, rather than a collection of stiff poses.
And I think that’s particularly important after a proposal.
You’ve just said yes!
You should be enjoying yourselves.
A Pride and Prejudice-inspired engagement session
I couldn’t photograph this session without mentioning Pride and Prejudice.
For Daniella, Chatsworth wasn’t simply a beautiful location.
It was somewhere that already held a little bit of magic because of her love of the story.
Chatsworth House is famously associated with Pride and Prejudice, having featured as Pemberley in the 2005 film adaptation.
So for a huge Pride and Prejudice fan, travelling from Florida to England and getting engaged at Chatsworth felt almost too perfect.
I’m not saying Lucas planned the proposal around a fictional Mr Darcy…
But I’m also not saying he didn’t.
Either way, he definitely understood the assignment.
