Some moments deserve to be remembered exactly as they happened.
Last week, I had the pleasure of photographing Blessy and Abin’s proposal session at Arley Hall & Gardens in Northwich, Cheshire – and it was such a lovely one to be part of.
There’s something incredibly special about photographing a proposal. Unlike a wedding, where everyone knows the day is coming, there’s that little bit of anticipation and secrecy beforehand. You’re waiting for the moment, camera ready, hoping everything comes together perfectly.
And for Blessy and Abin, it did.

A proposal at Arley Hall & Gardens
Arley Hall is such a beautiful setting for photographs.
The gardens offer so many different backdrops, from tree-lined paths and formal planting to the more intimate corners tucked away throughout the grounds. The venue itself is also surrounded by beautiful architecture and historic details, giving couples plenty of variety when it comes to photographs.
Arley Hall’s gardens are particularly well suited to relaxed couple photography because there’s plenty of space to wander rather than feeling like you have to stand in one spot and pose.
The gardens are also used for wedding ceremonies and photography, with Arley highlighting the Herbaceous Border, Arbour Walk, Vinery, Ilex Avenue and other areas as photographic locations.
For a proposal photographer, that variety is brilliant.

Capturing the moment without taking over
When I’m photographing a proposal, my aim is always to keep things feeling natural.
The last thing I want is for a couple to feel like they’re suddenly on a photoshoot.
Instead, I like to give you space to enjoy the moment while quietly documenting what’s happening. The nervous anticipation, the reaction, the hugs afterwards and those first few minutes of realising we’re actually engaged! are often some of my favourite photographs.
Once the surprise is over, we can then slow things down and take some time for photographs together.
That’s exactly what I love about combining the proposal itself with a short couple photography session.
You get the real, emotional moment alongside beautiful portraits celebrating the two of you being newly engaged.
Exploring the gardens together
After the proposal, Blessy and Abin had some time to relax and enjoy the gardens together while I photographed them.
Rather than filling the session with lots of complicated poses, I prefer to keep things relaxed and give couples little prompts that encourage them to interact naturally.
Walking together.
Talking.
Laughing.
Taking a moment to look at each other.
Those little interactions create photographs that feel much more like you.
And with somewhere as beautiful as Arley Hall Gardens, you really don’t need to overcomplicate things.
Why Arley Hall works so beautifully for proposal photography
If you’re considering proposing in Cheshire, Arley Hall & Gardens is definitely somewhere worth considering.
The combination of the historic hall, landscaped gardens and quieter paths creates plenty of possibilities for a proposal that feels personal rather than overly staged.
It’s also a fantastic setting for photographs afterwards, meaning you don’t have to head somewhere else for your engagement portraits.
Arley itself describes its gardens as offering numerous photographic locations, with access to the gardens for wedding photography and outdoor ceremonies.
