A golden-hour to moonlight engagement adventure in the Peak District
There are engagement sessions where you turn up, take a few portraits and head home.
And then there are the ones that feel like a proper adventure.
Barati and Kartik’s Peak District engagement session was definitely the latter.
We met in the late afternoon and headed out into the landscape as the sun began to drop. What followed was an evening of dramatic skies, windswept ridgelines, golden light, laughter, dancing, quiet moments together and, eventually, a crescent moon appearing above the moors.
It was exactly the kind of engagement photography I love to create.
Natural, cinematic and completely connected to the experience of being together.
I’m Priti, a Manchester-based Peak District engagement photographer, photographing couples across Manchester, Cheshire, the Peak District and beyond. My approach is relaxed, candid and cinematic, with a little direction when you need it and plenty of space for the session to unfold naturally.
Peak District engagement photography with a sense of adventure
There’s something special about photographing couples outdoors.
You’re not confined to a studio or a single backdrop. We can walk, explore and let the landscape become part of your story.
That’s what made this session with Barati and Kartik so much fun.
Rather than simply finding one viewpoint and spending an hour posing in front of it, we explored the landscape together.
As the evening went on, the light constantly changed.
The warm tones of golden hour gradually softened, the landscape became more atmospheric and eventually the sky turned a deep blue as daylight disappeared.
The photographs changed with it.
If you’re thinking about booking your own engagement photography session, I want the experience to feel like something you actually enjoyed doing together – not simply another item to tick off your wedding planning list.
Golden hour on the ridgeline
When we first started the session, the sun was beginning its descent.
The landscape was filled with warm amber light and the Peak District looked incredible.
Barati and Kartik walked together along the ridgeline, taking in the views and enjoying the evening.
There were plenty of beautiful portraits, but I was also watching for the moments happening naturally between them.
A laugh.
A glance.
The wind catching their hair.
A spontaneous dance.
The little moments that aren’t necessarily planned but often become some of the photographs you remember most.
For me, that’s what engagement photography should be about.
Not simply creating photographs of you looking at the camera, but documenting what it feels like to be together.
When the sun went down…
And then the light started to change.
The sun disappeared below the horizon and the warm tones gave way to the cooler blues of twilight.
This is one of my favourite parts of photographing outdoors.
That short period between day and night can completely transform the atmosphere.
The Peak District became quieter and more cinematic.
Barati and Kartik stood together against the fading landscape, surrounded by that beautiful blue twilight.
And then we noticed the moon.
A crescent moon over the Peak District
Just as we thought the evening couldn’t get any more atmospheric, a crescent moon appeared above the moors.
We paused and took it all in.
It felt almost surreal.
Those in-between moments are one of the reasons I love photographing engagement sessions.
There’s no need to rush from one pose to another.
Sometimes the best thing to do is simply stop.
Look around.
Enjoy where you are.
And let me photograph what happens.
Why the Peak District works so beautifully for engagement photos
The Peak District gives us so much to work with.
Open moorland.
Dramatic ridgelines.
Rolling hills.
Changing weather.
Big skies.
And incredible light.
It also means your engagement session can feel like more than a traditional photoshoot.
If you’re an outdoorsy couple, we can make the session part of an adventure.
We can walk, explore and discover different views rather than staying in one place.
And if you’re not particularly adventurous, that’s fine too.
The important thing is finding somewhere that suits you.
Your engagement session can be part of your story
I love photographing couples at different stages of their relationship.
Sometimes I meet couples for an engagement session before their wedding. Other times, I’m there much earlier – helping to capture the surprise proposal itself before we move into those first newly-engaged portraits.

From the question to the engagement photographs
Some of my favourite sessions have started with a surprise.
For example, I’ve photographed proposals at Chatsworth House, where the photography began discreetly before the big moment and then continued into relaxed portraits around the estate once the couple were newly engaged.

I’ve also photographed several other Chatsworth House proposal’s followed by an engagement session, making the most of the changing light as the evening progressed.
These sessions are a great reminder that your proposal and engagement photographs don’t necessarily have to be separate experiences.
